IPAD !!

MacNN | The Macintosh News Network

Apple today quietly pulled the comparisons of the iPhone 4's signal performance to rivals from its US antenna site. The company had just recently been adding comparisons of how grips hurt the connection, including the Droid X and N97 mini, but the new page now just leaves an overview of its wireless test labs. Some international pages, such as the Canadian site, still have the option to switch between this and the comparisons....

Steve Ballmer

Recently, critics of Microsoftís decision-makers have called on the companyís CEO, Steve Ballmer, to step down and give someone else with fresh ideas the opportunity to set the companyís direction. Itís a call that has been running through Redmond for years. And just as before, it wonít be enough to get Ballmer out of there. Perhaps, then, itís time to turn our attention to Cupertino and Apple....

Clearwire is nearing the addition of an extra compact 4G router on top of its slightly larger Spot 4G models. I received the iSkin Enigma in the mail for review not two days ago, but I’m already thoroughly impressed by the quality. It’s just a little bit on the bling-y side with all the chrome on the front, but the white leather on the back is quite classy, and the fit is absolutely superb. The cut-out for the camera lens is absolutely dead-on as well.

Most people (myself included) probably don’t have the extra $100 to purchase the Enigma, but it should be quite an interesting alternative to Vaja and other high-end case makers. Look for a full review in the coming weeks.

GE MOOD CAM APP

The application is called the GE Mood Cam app. Basically you take a picture of your room and then you slide the “Moodometer” to apply different filters to the image you took to simulate lighting effects in the room. Once you find the light effect you want, you can put together a shopping list of the GE bulbs you need to achieve the effect.

There are six different moods to choose from and you can even tell the app what sockets your light fixtures use so you get the exact bulb part numbers you need. The app is free and on the App Store right now.

MASAKA SOFT

MASAKA Soft today is pleased to announce the release of Disguised Cam version 1.5 for iPhone and iPod touch. Disguised Cam was developed specifically for users to take photos and video while “disguising” itself as a web browser app, an email app, an ebook reader app, a SMS app, or any other app that users prefer.

Ever saw a great photo opportunity but can’t take the picture because the normal camera interface would draw too much attention? If yes, Disguised Cam is the app that perfectly solves that situation. Disguised Cam allows users to take photos or capture video without any view finder shown. Instead, users can pretend that they were browsing web, reading email, text SMS, reading ebook or, with Custom Disguise mode on, pretending that they were using one of their favorite apps.

Disguised Cam works with a simple and intuitive control. Tap anywhere on screen once to take photo or start video recording, slide one finger down to reveal the viewfinder (to get a better aim at subject) and double-tap to open Settings. In Settings, users can choose the preferred Disguise mode or choose between still photo and video mode.

ANNOUNCE THE RELEASE

No Tie Software today is pleased to announce the release and immediate availability of Ringtones Uncensored Pro 6.1 for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch devices. Antennagate is over and, with Bumpers in hand, iPhone owners will be making and receiving more calls than ever. The big news is that the iPhone can finally tell you who is calling, literally, thanks to Ringtones Uncensored Pro! Users no longer need to remember which song corresponds to which contact. Every caller can be assigned a unique Talking CallerID ringtone using Ringtones Uncensored.

Talking Text-to-Speech Ringtones can be both professional and fun! Users can select from dozens of speaking voices, including British Man, Woman, Valley Girl, Jersey Girl, Old Man, as well as funny voices like Devil, Space Alien, Synthesizer and Whisper.

The German organization doesn’t specify which two rival handsets were tested but recalls that, while a decrease in signal was observed when their antenna was held, the most it could record was a 25-percent loss. As with Consumer Reports, the company suggests a length of tape placed over the iPhone 4?s antenna bridge as a temporary solution until a free iPhone 4 case arrives.

Stiftung Warentest’s results highlight another issue with smartphone signal strength, one that in fact Apple itself has identified: with no standardized way of displaying strength in bars, it’s hard for users to know whether what’s indicated on their screen means they’ll be able to place a call successfully or not. Apple recently pushed out iOS 4.0.1 for the iPhone 4 which reworked their signal strength banding; however this latest round of testing suggests that the iPhone 4 antennagate arguments aren’t going to go away any time soon.

Catamount Software has announced Today! 1.0, an app that supplements Calendar to add missing features sought out by busy professionals and others who need more ease, efficiency, and power than Apple’s Calendar supplies. Mail, Messages, and Phone all show a badge when you have things to do in them, but Calendar is missing this crucial piece of information so that allows you to quickly view what you have left to do today without needing to open Calendar.

Today! also shows all the information you need about appointment time, location, and notes for the appointment without needing extra taps, and integrates with Maps so you can tap on location to open the route to your next appointment.

“Finally an app that can actually help me manage my schedule. As great as the iPhone is, the calendar function requires several mechanical processes to manage your meetings, but with Today! all you need to do is turn on the phone and “presto” all your calendars are merged and managed right on the main screen. I’ve stopped missing meetings … now that’s great for Today!” – Andy Sanborn, busy small business owner.

That's right

Customers who purchased an iPhone 4 and an official bumper case online are reporting that Apple has begun automatically refunding the cost of the case.

Info

Apple this week declined to give a breakdown on Wi-Fi-only vs. 3G-capable iPad sales, but AT&T provided some insight when the wireless carrier revealed it activated between 400,000 and 500,000 last quarter, and reiterated its popularity with enterprise customers.

Info

Apple on Friday announced that it still has had difficulty in manufacturing the white version of its iPhone 4, and the product will not be available until "later this year."

Info

As promised, Apple on Friday launched its iPhone 4 Case Program, granting free cases to customers who buy a phone through Sept. 30, and refunding those who already bought a protective "bumper" through an iPhone application.

Info

Apple's touchscreen iPad officially went on sale in nine more countries Friday, resulting in long lines and waiting lists for customers in overseas markets, including Hong Kong.

Info

After making comments to the contrary this summer, Hewlett-Packard is now positioning its acquired Palm webOS as a competitor to Android and iPhone 4, as well as Apple's iPad, relegating its Windows 7 Slate PC offerings to a business tablet niche.

Reports

Reports that Apple's Mac Pro models are listed as unavailable in several retail stores' web based Reserve and Pickup listings may indicate the coming of a long overdue update to the high end desktop models.

Wow

A recently released survey of US iPhone users by the Yankee Group has found that despite lots of complaints, the majority are pleased with AT&T, even more so than subscribers on other carriers.

Good info

Hot on the heels of adding Nokia's N97 to its video showcase of phones that show signal attenuation when held, Apple has added Verizon's new flagship, the Motorola Droid X.

Info ppl

Some Apple retail stores have run out of stock of both 21.5-inch and 27-inch iMac models, ahead of an expected refresh to the desktop Mac hardware.

This has to be turning into one of those charming cage matches in which wrestlers desperately try to maim each other with chains and chairs and blows to very private regions.
In a new video, posted to both its own Web site and to YouTube, Apple attempts to show that the dazzling new Motorola Droid X, which many seem to rather appreciate, also has something of an issue when it comes to being held in the Death Grip.
You know, the grip where you wrap your fingers round your cell phone, and the onscreen signal bars drop like a swooning '50s starlet?

The  iOS 4.0.1 Software Update improves the formula to determine how many bars of signal strength to display on iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and iPhone 3G. The real signal strength remains the same, but the bars on iPhone will indicate it more precisely.
